Craftsy: online platform that delivers crafts education including quilting, knitting and cake decorating, all via high-definition interactive video tutorials and downloadable workshops. Frequent discounts upon newsletter sign-up. Great deals on shopping too.

Creativebug: another great online subscription platform of crafting workshops

QNNtv: online subscription service; some free content

The Quilt Show: mostly traditional content, but lots of inspiring quilts in their Quilt Gallery

Quilty: short-lived print mag but online content is still resourceful

Lucky Spool Quilting Club: online subscription, monthly skill building exercises

Cheryl Sleboda: technique of the week. Creative, traditional techniques with a modern focus. Loves technology and comics.

Lady Harvatine: offers 'half-assed' tutorials. Check out her tut on reverse applique circles.

She Can Quilt: helps eliminate scrap piles on Scraptastic Tuesday. Her tut on sewing curves without pins is mind blowing.

Missouri Star Quilt Company: online shop with a ton of tutorials on their YouTube channel

Fabric Spot: high quality, modern designer fabrics and organic fabrics for quilting, apparel, craft and home dec (Canadian)

Fridays Off Fabric Shop: online only, offering quality designer cotton fabric with a modern edge. Also has a monthly subscription fabric club. (Canadian)

Connecting Threads: great for books. Descriptions include links to each project, so you know what you are getting yourself into before buying the book.

Westwood Acres "I want her stash!" fabric & pattern club: fabric & pattern club that ships a unique, curated bundle and an exclusive paper pattern from one of their favourite designers to your doorstep each month.


Bricks & mortar


Online shopping is convenient but nothing beats touching the goods. Find that extra special item and help support our favourite local crafty shops. And if you're visiting Toronto, log into your favourite transit app, tie on some runners, and keep your credit card handy!

The Workroom: amazing merch from our meeting host in the West end (online shop too)

Fabric Spark and Country Clothesline: two great online shops that have come together in a fabulous space in the East end

Eweknit: Fabulous fabric and yarn shop (online too) on Bloor Street West just east of the Ossington subway station.

The Make Den: local sewing studio and fabric shop with 2 locations. Online classes can be found at The Woven Wolf.

Mokuba: stunning array of ribbons and trim on Queen Street West

The Knit Cafe: great yarn and awesome classes on Roncesvalles

Romni Wools: massive square footage of yarn on Queen Street West

The Purple Purl: a place to enjoy yarn, refreshments, and good company in the East end

  1. Hi Modern Quilters! On your list of local resources, you have forgotten to mention Eweknit (832 Bloor Street West & www.eweknit.co). The describe themselves as: "dedicated to the arts of handcrafting and making, we carry a wide variety of artisanal yarns, designer fabrics and notions for your knitting, sewing, embroidery, quilting & weaving activities." The store is like Purl Soho in New York but bigger!
