January 2021 Newsletter

Hello TMQG!

Happy New Year!

We have planned a wonderful year of quilting together!

Here's what's coming up from TMQG ...

January 2021 Zoom Meeting - Featuring Sandra Johnson

Our January meeting on Sunday, January 31, 3 - 5:30 PM will feature an exciting presentation by Sandra Johnson on Wearable Art. Sandra's website has this to say about her presentation:

What is art? What is fashion? Wearable fiber art can be anything from purchased fabrics or other materials and unique garments. A collection of several clothing items I have created will awaken your creative juices. Come see my wearable and interactive art pieces, some made from quilts.

Sandra will be joining our members once again for a blazer construction workshop (using your quilted pieces!) on April 10, 2021. You can register for the workshop soon!

This meeting will follow our "normal" Zoom format with WIP and Welcome, Feature Presentation, Show and Share, other business including the big reveal of our QuiltCon submission and a draw to a gift card for a local fabric store.

Guests are welcome with the purchase of $10 Zoom Guest Admission available in our online store.
Holiday Swap 2020 Update
Last November, members were invited to sign-up for a quick and simple gift exchange to help spread some cheer amongst our TMQG community.

Brandie W was thrilled to receive
this adorable zip pouch.

Xandra S was sent a pair of mitts, a mask and a pretty Christmas globe ornament.

A big thanks to everyone who participated. It's not too late to post your gifts to social media tagging
#torontomqg #TMQGsecretsanta.
Show and Share!
Don't forget to send in pictures for Show and Share of your recent (or not so recent) finishes. Some of you will have received an email about last year's UFO Challenge. This is your last chance to get your UFO's into the draw for prizes.

Please submit your pictures by noon on Saturday January 30th. If you are unable to submit your quilts using the form below, please email your information and photos to torontomodernquiltguild@gmail.com.

Update on Patchwork Initiative
In response to conversations about anti-racism this year, we are creating Patchwork — a social initiative to work towards long-term changes in the racial makeup of our guilds. The main piece of the project will be a sewing school geared towards youth of colour to teach basic sewing and quilting skills with the goal of ushering them towards the guild at an earlier age.

If you are interested in working on the curriculum creation, teaching classes, or are otherwise interested/have further questions, email
Faryn. Thank you to all who have already reached out, you will be contacted shortly. If you are paring down your sewing room at all, consider donating any extra notions to the project so we can begin building our resources.
Outreach Committee
In February we will be announcing this year's community outreach program.

We are continuing to make incubator covers for the NICU at St Joseph's Hospital. Covid 19 restrictions have created some difficulty getting the covers to them at this time but this will give us the chance to get all 20 completed and make a single drop off. Hopefully we will have some photos to share with all of you soon.
If you are interested in joining us, please sign up.

Some bad news regarding the Toronto Cat Rescue Recovery Center. They experienced a fire over the holidays. No one was hurt and luckily they didn't have any kitties in residence at the time. They are still assessing damages. If you wish to contribute any further kitty quilts it would be greatly appreciated. The quilts can be contributed to the Recovery Center for their use or to the Volunteer Center to be sold to raise funds for the organization.

And a Word from our Sponsor

The Fabric Curator is the sponsor of this month's "not a raffle" draw. Thank you from all of us.

Planning Ahead

Do you have an area of expertise to share with the guild? Sign up to give a Spotlight Presentation at one of our upcoming meetings! Click here to sign up, or to suggest a topic you would like to see included.

If you felt you were too mature to send a letter to Santa but still have ideas about presenters you'd like to see or workshops you'd like to take, suggestions are welcome at any time.

It is that time of year again - time to renew your guild memberships! You can go to our TMQG website store for all the details.
