July 2020 Meeting Recap

Hello TMQG!

If you attended our virtual meeting on Sunday July 26th, you already know about the fascinating presentation by quilter/artist/activist Chawne Kimber. If you couldn't make it, here is a recap of Dr Kimber's talk and trunk show. And scroll down to see our July 'Show and Share', as well as info about the August Stitch n' Chat.

Chawne Kimber
When the Cotton is High: Social Justice and Textiles

Dr. Chawne Kimber began her talk with a look at the long history of women "finding their voices" through the use of textile work. She showed some great examples of how, for centuries, women have used their skills in embroidery and quilting to make political statements, to tell their sometimes harrowing stories and to express a creative vision.

She went on to show examples of contemporary women artist such as Tracy Emin and Katherine Brainard, who like Kimber herself, have used textiles to convey a subversive message.

Dr. Kimber explained that she responds to events in her own community through her work; events that involve racism, stereotyping, sexual violence and censorship. She talked about the positive and negative reactions she gets to her work. The "Give a F*ck" quilt shown at QuiltCon 2013 broke down some barriers by asking the question: Are there limits to self-expression in quilt form?

She sees quilts as a venue for teaching —starting conversations around the difficult and sometimes uncomfortable issues facing us. She often finds a way to approach serious subjects with humour and playfulness. As her Instagram handle says she's a "Quirky, artsy, crafty, maths chick." Her presentation was both thought-provoking and moving. Her deep emotional commitment to the issues she confronts in her work was clear.

You can see more of her work on her website here  or follow her on instagram@cauchycomplete. Her video from the MQG Fresh Quilting Series can be viewed here.

Here is a recent finish made with swap blocks in gray, white and black.  I did the quilting in the swap blocks and my long arm quilter did the quilting in the turquoise parts.

Looking Forward
In lieu of an August meeting, the Guild will be hosting a virtual Stitch n' Chat, Sunday, August 30th from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Do you have tips or techniques for sewing curves to share? We'd love to have you demonstrate as we begin to prepare our QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt (have you joined in yet? If not, you can do so here, or read more about the challenge here!)

Let us know if you're interested in hosting a brief tutorial for the Stitch n' Chat by signing up here. We are looking forward to seeing everyone for casual conversations and skill sharing!
