February 2017 meeting recap

Since our usual meeting place at The Workroom Studio was packing up and moving to much larger digs, our February meeting was held at the Yonge/Eglinton branch of the Toronto Public Library. And although many of you were whooping it up at QuiltCon in Savannah, we were 30 strong, including 10 guests!

Show & Share

Sandra’s Sweet Sorts scrappy quilt had some lovely sashiko quilting in the negative spaces:

Her original Modern sampler was her first “attempt” at modern quilting. Whuuuutt?

Judy heartily endorsed two books that brought her modern quilting game on: Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts by Jacquie Gering & Katie Pedersen and Free-Motion Quilting by Angela Walters. These two books were the inspiration behind her quilts.

Resisting the Rules

Gwen shared two quilts for her “feral” grandsons (her word!):

Crocodiles

Under the Sea
Louise’s Nuns Playing Cards was inspired by a photograph of, yes, nuns playing cards:

Like many of her makes, Berene’s Teacup MiniMini was so tweeeee! One lump or two?

Projects & Challenges Updates

Berene collected several sweet #QuiltsForQC blocks to ship to the Montreal Modern Quilt Guild. Craftivism at its best!

Berene also reminded members about next month’s Block Lotto, the Pussy Block. One block gets you a ticket for the jackpot draw of all completed blocks. More info can be found under the Projects & Challenges tab on the guild site.

We also reminded members who signed up for our first UFO Challenge that the heat is on and that TMQG members should share their progress by tagging their registered UFOs on social media using the #tmqgUFO2017 hashtag. C’mon folks, let’s see some hearty competition!

Programming

After the break, Steff presented an inspiring and educational talk on creating scrappy improv quilts. Resourceful and motivating, she also provided some scrappy blocks for us to play with during the breakout session. Her presentation deck with all her links can be found here.

Meeting update

While The Workroom continues to set up and configure its new space, our March meeting will be held once again at the Yonge/Eglinton branch of the Toronto Public Library branch at 40 Orchard View Boulevard. This time, we'll be in room 224, starting at 2:45pm. In the meantime, don’t forget to show your support and check out The Workroom’s gorgeous new space at 1267 Queen Street West. More room means more goodness!

And don't forget to mark your calendar - Saturday, March 18 is World Quilting Day. What will you be working on?

Complete meeting minutes can be found under the Meetings tab.
