March 2017 meeting recap

Start pulling those bright, floral FQs from your stash as Spring is definitely in the air! This month’s gathering featured a spray of fresh sunny quilts and an enjoyable recap of this year’s QuiltCon from members who were lucky enough to attend.

Adrienne opened the meeting and updated members on where we’re at regarding our ongoing meeting space challenge. We appreciate your patience as we’re still working this out and weighing options that’ll benefit our guild. As soon as we know, you’ll know.
Karen welcomed this month’s guests: Joan, Christine, Sandy, Kim, Kellie, Sandra, Susan, Gail and Kate. Guests shared what brought them to our meeting and to modern quilting in general.

Block Lotto

The Pussy Block Lotto challenge was due this month and we had a record-breaking 152 blocks submitted! You makers are so awesome! The lucky winner of the whole lot was guest Sandra. We can’t wait to see her empowering quilt.

Show & Share

Peter’s Area Rug was a huuuuge quilt featuring the quilt-as-you-go technique. Quilted on his domestic, his even stitches were enviable.

Not all Show & Shares are about the quilts we make. Before taking us through her two quilts, Becky challenged the members with an odd notion that she inherited and remained a mystery to her. Elena to the rescue! She quickly Googled the patent n° and we soon discovered it was a bound buttonhole attachment.

An study in hand-piecing, Becky “I hate hand-piecing” Burnett’s Null & Void quilt was a twee sight to behold.

Becky’s Cloister Duck, her quilty homage to AutoCorrect is a great manifestation of a truly infuriating smartphone feature.

Shirley took us through her unfinished blocks from her QuiltCon workshops and shared her blocks from Berene’s Tattoo paper-pieced block series.

Berene and Ludgera followed up with more empowering Tattoo blocks. Get your tatts on and download the patterns at Berene’s Etsy shop.

Xandra’s Follow the Leader (pattern by husband and wife quilting duo Bill Kerr & Weeks Ringle) was the fifth quilt that she longarmmed on TheWorkroom’s Bernina Q24. She can’t get enough of that machine!

Yours truly shared the first of four UFO Challenge submissions, the Mystery Quilt by Lizzie House. At times more “misery” than mystery, I was pleased that I opted to make the medallions pop with some poufy trapunto quilting.

QuiltCon 2017 recap

Adrienne’s presentation featured the winning quilts from our members (Lynda’s O Canada eh?, Jeannie’s Fireworks, Dia’s C41 H64 O13 and guest Susan’s Wax & Wane) along with a review of category winners. All winners can be viewed here.

Attendees shared what they learned at their workshops and what they got out of QuiltCon lectures.

Puzzle winner extraordinaire Karen won the ultimate Tula Pink collection of thread from Aurifil. She's unstoppable! And super connected. Minimalist Design category winner Susan Kyle shared a heartfelt story about how after having missed her award ceremony due to travel delays, her new QBFF Karen reached out to the Chair of the MQG, Jacquie Gering, and soon enough, Jacquie made a special call out to give Susan the praise that she deserved and missed. <sniff>. Looks like my allergies are acting up.
