February 2021 Newsletter

Hello TMQG!

Happy Groundhog Day, again! The strange passage of time continues but we have spring and some great speakers and workshops to look forward to.

We have planned a wonderful year of quilting together!

Here's what's coming up from TMQG ...

February 2021 Zoom Meeting - Getting to Know You and More!

Our February meeting on Sunday, February 28, 3 - 5:30 PM will feature multiple breakout rooms so we can get to know one another a bit better. We'll have QuiltCon to talk about as well as the Spotlight and Outreach presentations described below.

This meeting will follow our "normal" Zoom format with WIP and Welcome from 3 to 3:30 PM, Spotlight presentation, a special Outreach project presentation, Show and Share, a draw for a gift card from a local fabric store as well as two social breaks.

On the topic of getting to know each other, please make sure to rename yourself if necessary when joining the meeting so we can address you by name instead of "So and so's iPad". Also, please leave your video on, at least while you're in a break out room. It's a bit unnerving to be faced with a black box and not know if there's actually a human behind it. Don't worry about whether you're having a bad hair day or if your sewing room is a mess. Nothing can top a naked husband strolling into camera range - true story!

Guests are welcome with the purchase of $10 Zoom Guest Admission available in our online store.
January Recap - Wearable Art by Sandra Johnson
Our January meeting featured an exciting presentation by Sandra Johnson on Wearable Art. Sandra's website has this to say about her presentation:

What is art? What is fashion? Wearable fiber art can be anything from purchased fabrics or other materials and unique garments. A collection of several clothing items I have created will awaken your creative juices. Come see my wearable and interactive art pieces, some made from quilts.

Sandra's presentation certainly did awaken the creative juices.  And our members and guests are salivating in anticipation of Sandra's quilted jacket construction workshop (using your quilted pieces!) on April 10, 2021. You can register for the workshop now. More on that below.

Coming Up in March - Pet Portraits with John MacPhail!

At our March 28th meeting John MacPhail of Art East Quilting Co. will provide a presentation of quilts and artwork in an interactive virtual trunk show. John will be encouraging us to ask questions and participate in the trunk show by sharing our own creations made from Art East Quilting Co. patterns to show and tell.

March 27 - Pet Portraiture Using Raw Edge Applique

John MacPhail of Art East Quilting Co. will be teaching this Zoom workshop on Saturday March 27th from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

This full day workshop will include choosing a reference photo, designing the portrait, and the techniques to complete the project. You will work with free motion quilting and adhesive products to produce the portrait. Note: You will probably not complete the project but will be set up with all skills needed to finish. This workshop is available for purchase in our store.

Coming Up in April - Quilted Jacket with Sandra Johnson!

Zoom Workshop:
Saturday, April 10th

Quilted Coat

Sandra Johnson of SandraJohnson Designs will be teaching this Zoom workshop from noon to 6:30 pm.

Sandra encourages her students to be bold with their fabric choices and find their inner creative "genius"! Learn the industry tricks used in creating ready to wear clothing that you can use in your everyday sewing. While making the AllWell Cardigan Coat pattern, participants will work with up-cycled materials to create a one-off custom look. Find those orphan blocks, well-loved (stained or patched) quilts, or other treasures from your closet, and turn them into a cozy quilted jacket. This workshop is available for purchase in our store.

You will receive a 15% discount on the AllWell Cardigan Coat pattern upon purchase of this workshop. This pattern comes with fully illustrated instructions and a free hacking guide (!!!)

Show and Share!
Don't forget to send in pictures for Show and Share of your recent (or not so recent) finishes.

Do any of you have QuiltCon rejects to show? Some of us can only dream of creating work of the level QuiltCon doesn't accept.

Please submit your pictures by noon on Saturday February 27th.

Spotlight - Fabric Dying with Snow and Ice - Doris Lovadina-Lee
So appropriate for a February meeting! Doris Lovadina-Lee of Doris Lovadina-Lee Designs will be demonstrating how she creates her gorgeous snow-dyed fabrics and scarves.
Outreach Committee
A new member, Angele Boudreau, has offered to head up this year's Community Outreach project. Through her work as a social worker, Angele has some wonderful ideas for this year. Let's just give a hint and say 'texture, sound and perhaps a little I spy.......

We are continuing to make incubator covers for the NICU at St Joseph's Hospital. Covid 19 restrictions have created some difficulty getting the covers to them at this time but this will give us the chance to get all 20 completed and make a single drop off. Hopefully we will have some photos to share with all of you soon.
